Well, this was supposed to be posted…yesterday (seeing it is after midnight).

I tried guys. Sometimes life gets really busy and you have to work late, and go shopping, and eat out. Like tonight. That’s what kept me busy.

What do you guys think of this lady? Would you like to see a male portrait next?

Also, Happy June!! Summer is so near; I can feel it!

Portrait Challenge 1/10 (Babies!)

Well, that day has come.

I’ll be doing a portrait challenge to improve my illustration skills and techniques. I struggle with using skin colors, especially when painting shadows and highlights. Facial proportions are so different between adults and babies, so I want to learn more about that. Eyes are another struggle of mine…they convey so much. Just a slight change in the eyes can ruin a picture!

Today is babies. It sounded like a good idea to start from the beginning, literally.

Babies are so precious. Perks of having a big family…there are always babies around! I actually got the inspiration to paint the last baby from a picture of my niece. She’s a perfect model.

Hope you guys enjoy this challenge! I’m sorry I can’t commit to a 30 day challenge (or *gasps* 100 day challenge!). Plus, I think you might get bored.

Ballerina Challenge 7/10

Number seven appears as a black swan, gracing Illustration Avenue with her mysterious presence.

Just kidding. I’m no poet.

Sometimes, though, when I paint, I get teensy glimpses of how I’m improving. Like this one. I painted this without using pencil. And I let the watercolor do its own work in her leotard and tutu. *baby steps*

I could’ve risked it even more and painted her face, but sometimes I’m just not brave enough. So I’ll settle for how it is.

The Quiet Snow

Winter Snow2.jpgIt is such a peaceful night here at home. The snowfall is so soothing and mesmerizing to look at. Everything slows down in snowy weather. In a good or bad way; it depends on your perception. I love the quiet, tranquil atmosphere it creates. Snow absorbs sound, that is why (thank you Olivia!).

I think some hot chocolate is in order to make the evening complete.

Stay warm out there! And drive safe 😉

Illustration Flaws

What I love about illustration is you can get away with a lot of flaws. A picture has to be just right but with drawing and painting, you can take a lot of liberties.

For example, even though people (usually) do not have perfect circles of blush on their cheeks, an illustration can pull it off effortlessly.

Also, a picture has to have just the right lighting, but you can create your own lighting when you draw/paint something.

Even the hair in this illustration looks quite undone by itself. But since the rest matches that in style, it somehow works.

There may be many small mistakes to the artwork itself, if one is critical, but altogether it can give an illustration charm and character 🙂

Let me know if you agree!
